FADE IN:
EXT.
ALBANIA - SARANDA - OLD BEACH - EARLY MORNING
SUPER: "SPRING 1983"
SUPER: "BASED ON A TRUE STORY"
ALEX, ten years old, and his father, NICOLA, watch the sun rise.
ALEX
Dad?
NICOLA
Yes, Alex.
ALEX
Do people die?
NICOLA
Yes, people do die sometimes.
ALEX
(curiously)
Why, Dad?
NICOLA
Because we're born, live for a few years, and then we die. It's our destiny.
Alex draws in the sand.
ALEX
Dad?
NICOLA
Yep.
ALEX
What's destiny?
NICOLA
Destiny... it's like a path that someone or something follows during his or its life-time.
ALEX
I don't understand, Dad.
NICOLA
Think about it this way. Imagine someone -- let's call him God or nature or whatever -- OK?
ALEX
OK!
NICOLA
Someone who created the earth, the planets, and even us, the people...
ALEX
OK!
NICOLA
He created us and also wrote a destiny for us. Whatever we do and we don't do, that's our destiny.
ALEX
Do you mean like a work schedule?
NICOLA
(smiling)
Something like that.
ALEX
But, Dad, how come sometimes the river changes its path and people die young without making babies?
NICOLA
(concerned)
Hmm, Alex... that's very hard to explain. You're going to have to figure that out for yourself. One day you will, I am sure of it.
Alex pulls at his ear.
ALEX
Dad?
NICOLA
Yes?
ALEX
Am I ever gonna die?
Nicola picks up a shell and throws it into the water.
NICOLA
(confused)
Yes, I am afraid that one day we're all going to die!
ALEX
But I don't want to die.
NICOLA
Trust me, you are not going to die young. You are going to live and be an old man, and if you fulfill your destiny, you may want to die.
ALEX
Dad, what's my destiny? Do you have it at home so I can read it and prepare for it?
NICOLA
(smiling)
Alex, destiny is unwritten!
ALEX
But how can I find out what path to follow?
NICOLA
Don't worry about your destiny. For the moment, look behind you. A part of your destiny is coming right now.
ALEX
(looking behind him)
Sofia!
SOFIA
Alex!
SOFIA (same age as Alex) approaches with her mother, NATALIE. Alex runs toward her.
NATALIE
Hi, Nick. How are you?
NICOLA
I am fine, Nat. How are you doing?
NATALIE
Not bad, just Sofia is driving me crazy.
NICOLA
How come?
NATALIE
Hmm, you know, too many questions. What's this? What's that? Why are boys boys and girls girls? You know, kids' stuff.
NICOLA
Tell me about it. Alex is killing me too. I don't know what to do.
NATALIE
Just make up a few stories, that's all. Do you think that they'll remember?
NICOLA
Listen, Nat, they're at a crucial age. By telling them stories, we confuse them. By telling them the truth, we confuse them more. I think that somewhere in between is the way of teaching them.
Alex chases after Sofia.
SOFIA
Alex?
ALEX
What?
SOFIA
I have a present for you! But you have to promise me that you're going to keep your eyes closed.
ALEX
(closes his eyes)
OK, I promise.
Sofia kisses him.
ALEX
(surprised)
Wow!
Sofia starts running again. Alex follows her.
ALEX
(laughing)
You're going to pay for it, young lady.
SOFIA
(laughing too)
I'm sorry!
Alex catches up to her and both sit down.
SOFIA
Alex, do you love me?
ALEX
Sof', I love you, and I want to be with you forever! When I grow up, I will marry you.
SOFIA
You promise?
ALEX
I promise, cross my heart.
Alex gets up and starts running toward the hill. When he arrives at the top, he starts jumping and cheering.
ALEX
Sofia, Sofia, I did it! I am the king of the world!
INT. NEW YORK - PLANE - AFTERNOON
SUPER: "30 YEARS LATER, 2013"
Bad weather, the plane is ready for takeoff.
PILOT
(on microphone)
Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. This is Captain James speaking. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for traveling with Panther Airlines to the capital of Albania, Tirana. Our journey will take approximately 120 minutes. Please remain in your seats and fasten your seat belts. Thank you for your cooperation.
The FLIGHT ATTENDANT checks the passengers' seat belts. In the back of the plane, OLD ALEX, a man in his mid-forties who seems to look lost and worried, attracts her attention. The attendant approaches him.
ATTENDANT
Are you OK, sir?
Old Alex turns his head toward her with a desperate look.
OLD ALEX
Yes, my dear, I am fine.
He forces himself to smile, but the smile disappears almost immediately.
ATTENDANT
Well, if you need something, just call me, OK?
Old Alex nods. The attendant leaves for her seat. Old Alex looks worried. He fidgets.
Sitting next to the Old Alex, ANDY tries to write something. After a few seconds, he closes his notebook and stares at Old Alex.
OLD ALEX
Am I so ugly that you have to stare at me?
Both laugh.
ANDY
No, sir, it's just that you look so anxious. Is this your first trip to Albania?
OLD ALEX
(struggling)
No...,I was born there.
ANDY
Really?
OLD ALEX
Yep.
ANDY
What is your name, sir?
The Old Alex hesitates.
OLD ALEX
Alex, yeah, that's right, that was my real name, Alex Kondi!
Andy starts to speak, but just looks at the man.
OLD ALEX
What about your name, my son?
ANDY
Andy, sir.
OLD ALEX
Is this your first visit to Albania, Andy?
ANDY
Yes, I never been to Europe before.
Andy looks out the window.
OLD ALEX
What is the purpose of your visit to Albania?
ANDY
I am a journalist and I am covering this documentary about the history of Albanian-American immigration to the United States.
ATTENDANT
Would you like something to eat, sir?
OLD ALEX
No thanks. I'm just going to have a cup of black coffee.
ANDY
(staring at him)
Sir, you said that you were born in Albania, but how did you come to America? You need a visa to get to the U.S! Isn't that right?
OLD ALEX
(laughing ironically)
Yes, that's right, a visa!
ANDY
So, how did you get your visa, sir?
OLD ALEX
Visa? Who said that I came with a visa to America?
ANDY
(surprised)
I don't understand.
OLD ALEX
It's a long story, Andy, a long, long story!
Old Alex stops talking and goes back to thinking.
Suddenly old Alex looks at Andy.
OLD ALEX
(smiling)
Do you want to hear how did I get in America, Andy?
ANDY
(without thinking)
Yes.
OLD ALEX
In order to understand this story, Andy, you have to hear it carefully, and in order to hear it carefully, you have to have the logic of the '90s. So I am going to tell you everything, in order for you to understand how things were back then.
INT. ALBANIA - SARANDA - HOME - MORNING
SUPER: "DECEMBER 31, 1990"
A small room in poor condition. RITA cleans, while her son ALEX (teenager) and husband Nicola are sleeping.
RADIO ANNOUNCER (ON RADIO)
Last night, Mr. Berisha urged the regime to initiate a broad program of liberalization. However, the first Secretary of State, Ramiz Alia, refused to permit the taped interview to be aired. The government is responding to popular pressure by proclaiming a series of economic and legal reforms. Mr. Berisha praised the first step but urged the regime to ezpand reforms.....
RITA
Alex, wake up, it's 8 o'clock in the morning.
ALEX
Oh, Mom, I don't have school today. Please let me sleep!
RITA
It's New Year's Eve tonight and I don't want the New Year to find the house dirty.
(beat)
Why don't you go out and play with your friends?
Alex struggles to get out of the bed.
ALEX
OK, Mom, it's not your fault. It's my fault that I let Dad marry you.
Rita kisses him.
RITA
Ha-ha, very funny. Now get out of here.
Rita enters her bedroom. Nicola is in bed, awake.
RITA
And I was wondering where my son gets his habits.
NICOLA
From his mom. If I'm not mistaken, your father doesn't know how to do anything but sleep.
Rita kisses him.
RITA
Stop talking like that about your father-in-law.
EXT. ALBANIA - SARANDA - HOME - MORNING
Alex exits the house. Two little kids, OLIVIA and MENELAUS, play.
ALEX
Olivia.
OLIVIA
Oh my God, you're up so early? Something must be wrong with you!
ALEX
Ha-ha. Olivia, tomorrow I am taking you to the old beach, OK?
OLIVIA
(happy)
You promise?
ALEX
Cross my heart.
MENELAUS
What about me?
ALEX
You too, Menelaus.
OLIVIA
But what if the god of the sea takes you away from us for many years?
ALEX
I will do my best to come back and take my sister where I promised. Imagine, we will be old people, and ugly!
OLIVIA
(laughing)
It's not funny. You better take me to the old beach tomorrow.
Alex kisses her and leaves.
EXT. ALBANIA - SOCCER FIELD - MORNING
Alex and his friends play soccer. SOFIA (teenager) comes over. Alex sees her, stops playing, and asks someone to replace him.
ALEX
Hey, Sof.
SOFIA
(ironically)
Hi, handsome.
ALEX
(smiling)
How are you?
SOFIA
(smiling)
Fine.
ALEX
Are you coming to the old beach tonight?
SOFIA
(smiling)
Maybe.
EXT. ALBANIA - SARANDA - OLD BEACH - DUSK
Sofia and Alex sit next to each other and watch the sunset. Alex has his arm around Sofia.
SOFIA
Alex, do you love me?
Lost in his thoughts. Realizes that Sofia asked a question.
ALEX
Yep, I love you!
(beat)
You know, yesterday I had a dream.
SOFIA
Was I there?
ALEX
Of course.
Both laugh.
ALEX
But it was kind of weird.
SOFIA
What was weird about it?
ALEX
We were on a big boat, traveling. Suddenly, I jumped into the water. I tried to get on the boat again, but another boat passed and took me away. The weird thing is that the boats were going in different directions.
SOFIA
Wow! I think it has to do with destiny. Do you believe in destiny, Alex?
ALEX
Yes, and I believe that my destiny is to be with you, and together we'll go to America one day!
SOFIA
(laughing)
We live in a communist country. We can't even go to the next city without reporting it.
ALEX
(concerned)
You never know, Sof', you never know!
EXT. ALBANIA - SARANDA - CENTRAL PARK - LATE EVENING
There are many people in the park. The older people play cards. The younger people hang around and talk loudly.
A black Jeep stops at the front side of the park. ARMY OFFICER jumps out of the Jeep.
ARMY OFFICER
I have news! The communist regime of 50 years has come to an end! Most of the members of the parliament have already resigned. The borders with Greece are finally open!
The officer drives off into the dark night. Silence at first. Then people begin to shout and run about excitedly, leaving the park. Rita and Nicola search for Alex in the mass of people.
RITA
Alex!
ALEX
Mom, Dad, where are you? Let's go!
RITA
Where, honey, what's this crazy idea?
ALEX
Mom, everybody is leaving for Greece. Our dream, finally!
RITA
(to her husband)
Do something!
NICOLA
Alex, this is crazy! If it's true that the borders are open, we can all leave later on. We waited so long for this, let's wait a couple of more days.
ALEX
I am sorry dad, only God can stop me from leaving!
Alex looks into the crowd for someone.
ALEX
Sof'!
SOFIA
Alex!
They hug each other.
ALEX
Our dream, Sof', has come true! We are going to Greece and then we will try to go to America!
He helps her to get on a truck. Other people are boarding it as well.
SOFIA
Finally!
Natalie grabs Sofia's hand and pulls her out of the truck.
NATALIE
Over my dead body!
SOFIA
Mom! I love Alex, and I am going with him.
NATALIE
No, Sofia, I am not letting my girl leave with a bunch of people who don't know where they're going!
SOFIA
No, Mom, please, I want to go with Alex.
RITA
Natalie, they love each other, honey! I don't want them to leave either, but don't separate them, Natalie, please don't do that!
Natalie keeps Sofia from leaving.
NATALIE
Sorry, Rita.
The driver starts the engine.
SOFIA
(crying)
Alex, please don't leave! You said that you love me!
ALEX
I do, I am crazy about you, but this is about my dream, my destiny, remember? I will come back, and take you away to America. I promise you!
Rita takes her jacket off and gives it to Alex. Nicola takes all the money from his pocket.
NICOLA
Take this money. You may need to exchange it in Greece.
ALEX
Where are Olivia and Menelaus?
RITA
Sleeping. Olivia wants to wake up early in the morning for the promise that you made. Poor girl!
ALEX
Kiss them for me, would you?
Rita nods. She takes off her cross and gives it to Alex.
RITA
Take it, it will protect you!
ALEX
Mom, this cross is important to you!
RITA
Alex, nothing is more important to a mother than her children!
The truck starts to move. Rita and Sofia run after the truck. It speeds up and disappears with Alex. People stand mournfully. Some walk toward their houses. Nicola checks his watch.
NICOLA
After 17 years, this is our first New Year's without him. Happy New Year, Alex! Please God, protect my son!
EXT. GREECE-ALBANIA BORDER - REFUGEE CAMP - MORNING
SUPER: "JANUARY 1, 1991"
Cars arrive from many directions. People talk loudly, shout, and push each other.
A SERIOUS OFFICER interviews people.
SERIOUS OFFICER
(subtitled)
What's your name?
ALEX
(subtitled)
Alex, mister.
SERIOUS OFFICER
Are you Greek?
ALEX
My parents are Greeks.
SERIOUS OFFICER
OK, go on this side, please.
Alex sees that the officer is dividing people into two groups.
ALEX
Sir, can I ask you something?
SERIOUS OFFICER
Yes!
ALEX
Why are you dividing people?
SERIOUS OFFICER
(Looking at him)
Because there are Albanians and Greeks, Alex!
ALEX
So?
SERIOUS OFFICER
I can't put Albanians and Greeks together.
ALEX
They are people, too, mister, and beside that, we've lived together for many years and never had a problem.
SERIOUS OFFICER
Listen, I understand, but these are my orders. Don't try to be smart! Take the opportunity that I am giving you. Don't worry about them.
Alex thinks for few seconds and joins the Albanians. An Albanian OLD MAN looks at Alex with admiration.
EXT. GREECE-ALBANIA BORDER - REFUGEE CAMP - NIGHT
People try to sleep, shivering and cold. A little baby cries. Alex tosses restlessly.
Alex hears footsteps. He gets out of his bed and sees GREEK SOLDIERS going quietly inside one of the other tents.
Alex hears people arguing. One of the soldiers comes out dragging a YOUNG GIRL. The other soldier points his gun at the old man.
Alex follows the soldiers. They disappear behind a building. The girl screams.
Alex sees them raping her! He looks at their guns and hesitates. Alex goes back to his tent and prays, kissing the cross from Rita!
ALEX
(whispers)
Thank God I didn't take Sof' with me!
EXT. GREECE-ALBANIA BORDER - REFUGEE CAMP - MORNING
Alex wakes up and leaves the tent. He finds the old man outside his tent.
ALEX
Good morning, sir.
The old man seems not to hear Alex.
ALEX
I saw what happened last night!
OLD MAN
My little angel is in the hospital. I can't even complain to anybody.
ALEX
You can report it.
OLD MAN
They threatened me. If I talk, they will kill her. Forget about it.
ALEX
That's not fair!
OLD MAN
Listen, my son, from the moment that you decide to become an emigrant, you have to take off the word "fair" from your dictionary.
Alex goes to the other side of the camp, where breakfast is being served. Everybody waits for food. Women and children are served first. LEO looks at Alex.
LEO
Alex, hey, Alex. It's me, Leo.
ALEX
Leo, what are you doing here?
LEO
Trying to be a successful emigrant.
Both laugh.
ALEX
Leo, this place sucks, man! People are treated like animals. Yesterday, I saw two soldiers rape a young girl!
LEO
That's nothing. I have seen worse!
ALEX
What are we going to do then?
LEO
(lowering his voice)
I am leaving tonight for Athens. Do you wanna come?
ALEX
Yeah, but they won't let us go.
LEO
(laughing)
Who is gonna ask them?
EXT. GREECE-ALBANIA BORDER - REFUGEE CAMP - NEXT MORNING
Leo and Alex sneak past the guards. They get to the highway and try to flag down a vehicle, but it speeds by.
A truck approaches. They wave wildly. It stops. TRUCK DRIVER gets out.
TRUCK DRIVER
(subtitled)
Hey guys, where are you going?
LEO
Athens.
TRUCK DRIVER
20,000 drachmas per person.
ALEX
What?
TRUCK DRIVER
Or else, I leave.
LEO
All right, all right.
Leo gives the truck driver money. They climb on the truck.
INT. GREECE - ATHENS - CENTRAL PARK - LATE EVENING
Alex and Leo find a spot to sleep.
LEO
We can sleep here.
Both shiver in the cold.
ALEX
Leo.
LEO
Yep.
ALEX
What are we going to do?
LEO
Sleep, we will find something tomorrow.
INT. GREECE - ATHENS - CENTRAL PARK - DAY
Leo wakes up. Then Alex wakes up.
LEO
Morning Alex.
ALEX
(in a bad mood)
Morning. Can we sleep a bit more?
LEO
(ironically)
Of course, 'honey', as much as we want.
Both get up and start walking.
MONTAGE - ALEX AND LEO LOOK FOR JOBS IN DIFFERENT SHOPS
OLD ALEX (V.O.)
It took us all day till we found an old restaurant. The boss was looking for a dishwasher and agreed to take both of us. It was a hard job and didn't pay much, but we didn't have a choice, and the boss allowed us to sleep in the basement.
INT. GREECE - ATHENS - BASEMENT - AFTERNOON
Leo and Alex lie on cots.
ALEX
Leo?
LEO
Yep.
ALEX
Do you ever dream?
LEO
Sometimes, why?
ALEX
I dream a lot.
LEO
It's just part of our sleep, that's all.
ALEX
No, no. I am talking about daydreaming, with my eyes open.
LEO
What's the difference?
ALEX
You don't control night dreams. But in daydreams, you are the actor, the producer. It's like making a movie without expenses. You can imagine whatever you want!
LEO
(laughing)
Listen, Spielberg, let's get some sleep now, because tomorrow we have to wash dishes again. Forget about dreams. I am more for reality. Good night, Alex.
ALEX
Good night.
Leo turns away from Alex, then turns back toward him.
LEO
Alex?
ALEX
Yep.
LEO
Sometimes I dream too, but reality kills my dreams. Somewhere I read that 'reality is stronger and stranger than fiction!'
Both sleep.
OLD ALEX (V.O.)
It was the first time that I heard Leo talking like that, and unfortunately the last!
ANDY (V.O.)
Why, what happened after that? Did you separate?
Old Alex don't answer.
INT. GREECE - ATHENS - BASEMENT - EVENING
SUPER: "TWO YEARS LATER, 1993"
Alex tries to sleep. Leo writes a letter. Alex jumps up.
LEO
Wow, what's up?
ALEX
Leo, I can't stay in this country any longer.
LEO
What are you talking about?
ALEX
I have a dream, Leo. I want to go to America. We spent two years of our lives in Greece and we've got nothing!
LEO
Listen Alex. Do you think that I like staying here in Athens, spending my life washing dishes and living under a Greek name in order to get the respect of Greek people?
(beat)
What do you think, that it is easy to go to America?
Alex wrings his hands.
ALEX
I found a Greek passport for a few thousand drachmas. I am leaving in few days for Italy.
LEO
(desperate)
I never imagined that this moment would come! You are the only friend I have here in Athens.
ALEX
I am sorry Leo, but why don't you come with me?
LEO
I can't. My parents are sick. I have to work in order for them to pay for their medicine.
EXT. GREECE - PATRA - PASSPORT CHECK POINT - AFTERNOON
Alex and Leo hug each other.
LEO
Are you sure you want to do this, Alex?
ALEX
Yes, I don't want, one day, to be sorry for my weakness. The most important thing in life is trying to get something, regardless of what you get at the end.
LEO
(desperate)
You know better.
(beat)
Anyway, good luck.
ALEX
Hey, hey, I don't want to see this sad face. I want to remember the funny Leo that filled my empty evenings with stories and jokes.
LEO
Write me if you can.
ALEX
I will.
Alex heads toward the passport check point.
LEO
Alex, hey, Alex.
Alex turns his head.
LEO
Am I in your dreams?
ALEX
(smiles)
Of course. Maybe in reality I am leaving alone, in my dreams, we are leaving together!
LEO
(smiles back)
Thanks.
OLD ALEX (V.O.)
That was the last time I saw Leo. I still remember his smile!
ANDY (V.O.)
I don't understand something. Why didn't you leave directly for America instead of going to Italy?
OLD ALEX (V.O.)
My plan was to go to a European country and then to Canada. From Canada, it was easy to pass the borders if you had the money.
ANDY (V.O.)
So, you went to Canada through Italy and then to America, and the story ends there.
OLD ALEX (V.O.)
Hold on, Andy, the story is somewhat different!
(beat)
After traveling 36 hours with the ship, I arrived in Ancona, north of Italy.
ANDY (V.O.)
How did you pass the check point with a false passport?
OLD ALEX (V.O.)
(Laughing)
Even if I had a lady's passport, they wouldn't notice. They didn't bother to check my passport because Greece is part of the European community.
INT. ITALY - ANCONA - TRAIN STATION - AFTERNOON
Alex pays for a ticket.
INT. ITALY - ANCONA - TRAIN - DARK NIGHT
Alex, alone, sleeps in a cabin.
Someone sneaks inside the cabin and takes his baggage.
INT. ITALY - TRAIN STATION - MORNING
The train stops, waking Alex.
Alex sees his baggage is missing! Gets off the train and looks desperately, but finds nothing.
Alex walks the streets, looking desperate. Night falls. Alex sits on a side of a bridge, looking confused.
ILIR approaches Alex and asks him something in Italian. Alex shakes his head, not understanding.
ALEX
I am Albanian.
ILIR
I am Albanian, too. What are you doing here? It's so cold!
ALEX
I have nowhere to go.
ILIR
(thinks for few seconds)
You know what, come with me. It's nothing special, but it's better than nothing.
ALEX
(confused)
OK.
OLD ALEX (V.O.)
I didn't have a choice. I had to go with him.
ANDY (V.O.)
I don't understand, you trusted a stranger?
OLD ALEX (V.O.)
(upset)
I'd rather go with him and take my chances than stay on that bridge and die!
(beat)
We went to an old building with no lights and no furniture -- only a few dirty beds on the floor.
(laughs)
You will not believe it, but I was so scared that I slept with my shoes on!
INT. ITALY - ANCONA - MORNING
Alex wakes and looks around. Sees a number of people sleeping.
ILIR
Morning, my friend. I didn't catch your name.
ALEX
Alex.
ILIR
I am Ilir. So, Alex, how long have you been in Milan?
ALEX
Only a day. I came from Greece two days ago.
ILIR
Why did you leave Greece? Didn't you like it there?
ALEX
Too much work and very little money.
ILIR
Do you think it's better here in Italy?
ALEX
Actually, I didn't come to Italy to stay. I am just passing through, trying to go to Canada.
ILIR
(surprised)
Wow, but what happened? Why were you on that bridge?
ALEX
(desperate)
I got robbed on the train, in my sleep.
ILIR
Oh, Alex, I am sorry to hear that, but welcome to Italy!
ALEX
(laughing ironically)
I get your point.
ILIR
Actually, what are you going to do now?
ALEX
I am going to stay here for awhile. If I find a job and make some money, I may buy another passport and try again.
ILIR
That's hard if you don't speak Italian. Do you have any money on you?
ALEX
Nothing!
ILIR
(laughing)
Just like everybody here, broke! Listen, there are charities around here. You can get some food there, and you can sleep over here. We don't pay any rent anyway.
ALEX
Thanks!
EXT. ITALY - MILAN - MORNING
Outside the charity building. Many people wait, mostly Albanians. The door opens. Everybody pushes each other. They get inside a room that looks more like a church than a dining room.
ALEX
Are we going to eat or what? I am hungry.
ILIR
(laughing)
Hold on, Alex. The lobster takes time.
Everybody laughs. A door opens and an OLD LADY comes out.
ILIR
Oh!
The door opens again and a PRIEST comes out.
ALEX
What's going on?
ILIR
We have to sing again.
ALEX
We have to do what?
ILIR
(ironically)
If you don't sing, the lobster doesn't come!
Everybody laughs.
ILIR
Listen, Alex, there is nothing free in this world. You have to give something in order to get something else!
(beat)
The priest believes that if we sing, we will become Catholics. He doesn't know that God himself abandoned us!
INT. PLANE - IN FLIGHT - AFTERNOON
OLD ALEX
Ilir was a nice guy, honest!
ANDY
So what happened then? Did you eat the lobster?
OLD ALEX
(laughing)
Oh Andy, did you really believe that there was lobster?
ANDY
What then?
OLD ALEX
Coffee and bread, that's all!
(beat)
I'd never been in that condition before. The only thing that mattered at that moment was food. I'd wake up in the morning and think about nothing but food.
(beat)
A year passed and I was still there. No job, no money, nothing!
DISSOLVE TO:
EXT. ITALY - MILAN - MORNING
SUPER: "ONE YEAR LATER, 1994"
Alex walks, wearing old clothes and old shoes. He stops outside a shop and looks at expensive shoes. Finally, Alex goes inside the shop.
SHOPKEEPER
(subtitled)
Good morning sir.
ALEX
Morning.
Alex tries on the shoes and walks to the counter.
SHOPKEEPER
(smiles)
Do you like the shoes, sir?
ALEX
Yes, a lot!
SHOPKEEPER
How would you like to pay, cash or charge?
Alex holds out his empty pockets. The shopkeeper's smile disappears.
SHOPKEEPER
Then you have to return the shoes.
ALEX
But it is too cold outside, mister!
SHOPKEEPER
Pardon me?
ALEX
My shoes are too old and it is too cold outside. I am sorry I don't have any money on me. If I find a job, I will return your money one day.
SHOPKEEPER
Listen, my friend, leave the shoes and get out of here!
ALEX
I am sorry, mister, I can't.
SHOPKEEPER
What? Stand right there and don't move.
Alex stands defiantly as the shopkeeper calls the POLICE. POLICEMAN arrives.
POLICEMAN
Morning, what's going on in here?
SHOPKEEPER
Listen, officer, this gentleman doesn't want to pay for the shoes.
POLICEMAN
(smiling)
So don't give him the shoes.
SHOPKEEPER
Yeah, but he is wearing the shoes.
POLICEMAN
(to Alex)
What's going on, sir? Why don't you pay for the shoes?
ALEX
I can't, mister. It's cold out and I need shoes!
POLICEMAN
So, buy the shoes.
ALEX
I don't have any money on me, because I am not working.
POLICEMAN
(giving Alex a good look)
Do you have any ID on you?
Alex gives him an ID.
ALEX
I got this ID from the charity, mister.
POLICEMAN
Why don't you ask the charity for shoes?
ALEX
They don't give shoes, only a few old clothes.
POLICEMAN
(nicely)
I am sorry... Alex, is that right?
ALEX
Yeah.
POLICEMAN
I am sorry, Alex, but you have to give back the shoes and I will let you go.
ALEX
No, mister, I am not giving back the shoes.
POLICEMAN
(to shopkeeper)
The boy refuses to take off the shoes. Do you want me to take action?
SHOPKEEPER
(very upset)
Of course, take the shoes from him!
POLICEMAN
(ironically)
Sir, I am a policeman, not a clown. If you want, I can take him to the nearest police station and you can file a suit against him. That's all I can do.
SHOPKEEPER
OK, arrest him. Where does he think he is? These foreigners know how to steal, and nothing else!
ANDY (V.O.)
So, you went to court?
OLD ALEX (V.O.)
Yeah!
ANDY (V.O.)
Why did you do that?
OLD ALEX (V.O.)
I was upset with my life, so I thought it would be better for me in prison than outside.
ANDY (V.O.)
What, you did that on purpose?
OLD ALEX (V.O.)
Yeah, Andy, in prison, you get free room and board!
INSERT - MAGAZINE COVERS
"Albanian Emigrant Refuses to Take Off Stolen Shoes"
"Shopkeeper Sends Emigrant to Court for Pair of Shoes"
INT. NEW YORK - PLANE - AFTERNOON
ANDY
How long did they sentence you?
OLD ALEX
What do you mean?
ANDY
I mean, they sent you to prison, didn't they?
OLD ALEX
Oh no, Andy, as Leo said once, 'Reality is stronger and stranger than fiction!'
ANDY
So, what happened then?
OLD ALEX
There was a law that protected me. Italy was part of the European Community, and the Community was paying big money for the emigrants. It was for our education, room and board. In other words, for our needs. So my lawyer mentioned that in court and the judge decided that the government should pay for my shoes. I was so happy! I won in court and I owned the shoes. When I got out of prison, many people, including reporters, were waiting for me.
(beat)
Suddenly, I was famous!
INSERT - MAGAZINE COVERS
"Albanian Emigrant Wins Case, Government Pays for Shoes!"
"The Emigrant Who Beat the Government!"
OLD ALEX
Unfortunately, it didn't last long! The war in Bosnia, the former Yugoslavia, was a more important issue, so in little time, I became an ordinary emigrant again.
ANDY
So, back to the charities?
OLD ALEX
Not for long. The government decided to give us some kind of papers, and I was able to work. I worked at McDonalds as a cleaner.
CUT TO:
INT. ITALY - MILAN - MCDONALDS - EVENING
Few customers inside. Alex mops under the tables. The TV is on. Alex stops for a moment and listens.
FOREIGN MINISTER (ON TV)
Albanian refugees are responsible for the chaos that goes on in Italy. They steal, kill, and they do everything for money. Also, they are responsible for the high rate of AIDS that Italy has at the present time.
HEALTH MINISTER (ON TV)
(to Foreign Minister)
I don't want to argue with you, sir, but based on my statistics, before the borders with Albania opened, Albania didn't have even a single person with AIDS. Also, at that time, they had the lowest crime rate in Europe!
FOREIGN MINISTER (ON TV)
So why do they do what they are doing today?
HEALTH MINISTER (ON TV)
(ironically)
Because we taught them!
FOREIGN MINISTER (ON TV)
Are you saying that we are responsible for this situation?
HEALTH MINISTER (ON TV)
Not exactly. There are some ordinary thieves and criminals among the emigrants, but still, we can't generalize. Most of them are nice people who come to Italy for a better life. There are low-paying jobs that most Italians refuse to take, which Albanians are taking.
FOREIGN MINISTER (ON TV)
This situation creates unemployment!
HEALTH MINISTER (ON TV)
As I know, sir, your father went to America a couple of years ago. America didn't throw him out, but gave him a job, gave him a chance so he could send money to his family and enable you to study and become the man you are today. I don't think that your father and his friends created unemployment in America. As everybody knows, they built a great country for which they are proud!
Alex's MANAGER switches off the TV.
MANAGER
Let's get to work, Alex.
INT. ITALY - MILAN - HOME - AFTERNOON
Ilir tries to fix an old transistor. Alex enters.
ALEX
Hey, Ilir, how are you doing?
ILIR
Hey, I am OK. Uh, listen, I got news for you. I found a cheap Greek passport.
If you want, we can go tomorrow. The chances of passing the borders are 50-50, so you decide.
ALEX
(happily)
Let's go, please. Let me take my chances.
EXT. ITALY - MILAN - TRAVEL AGENCY - DAY
Alex and Ilir enter the travel agency.
ALEX
So, Ilir, I guess this is it, time to go. But before I go, I would like to thank you for everything that you did for me.
ILIR
I did nothing for you. Just have a good trip to Canada.
ALEX
Thanks.
They hug each other.
ILIR
Good luck!
INT. HOLLAND - AMSTERDAM - KLM AIRPORT - DAY
In front of the passport check desk. IM.OFFICER #1 checks passports.
IM.OFFICER #1
(Dutch accent)
Ladies and gentlemen, the airplane is departing in 10 minutes. Please have your passports and tickets ready.
An OLD COUPLE argues quietly about their passport. Alex looks nervous!
IM.OFFICER #1
May I have your passport, please?
Alex hands over the passport.
IM.OFFICER #1
Where are you going, sir?
ALEX
Canada.
IM.OFFICER #1
What is the purpose of your trip to Canada?
ALEX
Visiting a friend of mine.
IM.OFFICER #1
Would you wait in that corner, please?
Alex waits. The officer talks into his radio-transmitter. IM.OFFICER #2 enters and leads Alex away.
INT. HOLLAND - AMSTERDAM - IMMIGRATION OFFICE - MOMENTS LATER
IM.Officer #2 checks the passport with the laser machine.
IM.OFFICER #2
(looking at Alex)
Well, young man, tell me the truth. Where did you get this passport?
ALEX
(surprised)
I don't understand?
IM.OFFICER #2
The passport isn't yours...
ALEX
No, mister, this is my passport.
IM.OFFICER #2
Sorry, 'mister', but I have to keep you here until we prove your real identity!
Alex looks out the window and sees an airplane leaving.
ALEX
But mister, my baggage is on the airplane!
(thinking)
Who cares about the baggage? My dreams are on that plane. Now they're gone with the plane! Bye America!
OLD ALEX (V.O.)
That moment changed everything! If I had gotten through that time, I might not have had to go through all that I did!
ANDY (V.O.)
So what happened then? Did they send you back to Italy?
OLD ALEX
First, they arrested me. When I saw that they were preparing to send me back to Italy, I decided to ask for political asylum. It was one way of staying in Amsterdam. Of course, I gave them my real identity.
CUT TO:
INT. AMSTERDAM - KLM - IMMIGRATION OFFICE - AFTERNOON
IM.OFFICER #3 stands in front of Alex.
IM.OFFICER #3
So, Mister Kondi, are you saying that your life is in danger in your country?
ALEX
(in mock desperation)
Yes, mister. Nothing is stable. I lost a cousin last week.
IM.OFFICER #3
(concerned)
Hmm... listen, Mister Kondi, you haven't convinced me that your life is in danger. However, we are going to check your story and contact you. In the meantime, you are going to be in one of the refugee camps outside of Amsterdam.
OLD ALEX (V.O.)
Life in camp was hell. People fighting for food and places to sleep. The camp was worse than Italy.
INT. AMSTERDAM - IMMIGRATION CAMP - NIGHT
Many people sleep in the room. RICHY and TOUGH GUY enter the camp. The light goes on.
RICHY
Hey, guys, did you miss us?
Everybody looks scared. Richy approaches MILTO(12 years old).
RICHY
Well, well, look who's here.
TOUGH GUY
Our friend Milto?
MILTO
Richy, please don't hurt me.
RICHY
Where have you been for the last two weeks?
MILTO
I was very sick.
RICHY
Oh yeah...
Richy checks Milto's pockets. Finds money. Pockets it.
RICHY
So, you little rat, what the hell is this?
Milto doesn't talk. Richy punches Milto in his stomach. Sees Alex.
RICHY
Who the hell is he?
MILTO
He's fresh.
RICHY
What's your name, buddy?
ALEX
Alex.
RICHY
(to Milto)
Did he pay the tax?
MILTO
No.
RICHY
Milto, 'baby', I don't have time for explanations. Tell this guy the rules, OK?
(beat)
And don't disappear again, because I am going to break your legs, understood?
MILTO
Whatever you say.
Richy and his partner leave.
ALEX
What's going on in here? Who are these people? And what kind of tax were they talking about?
MILTO
Listen, my friend, these guys rule in here. They are very bad guys. You don't argue with them. They can make you disappear and nobody will ever notice. You're better off paying them some money than being on your own!
ALEX
But I don't have any money!
MILTO
Don't worry about that. Come with me tomorrow. You will work for me.
ALEX
For you? How old are you? And what kind of job is it?
MILTO
Don't worry, you'll find out tomorrow.
ANDY (V.O.)
So they were from Albania too?
OLD ALEX (V.O.)
Oh no, Andy, they were from Romania.
EXT. HOLLAND - AMSTERDAM - CENTER - MORNING
Alex and Milto walk along a busy street.
MILTO
OK, Alex, let's start working. Your job is to cover me. Look for suspicious people. Also, try to get people's attention so nobody notices me when I work.
ALEX
(confused)
OK!
Milto mingles with a group of people. Alex starts SINGING. People look at him. Milto comes toward him.
MILTO
Run, Alex, run!
ALEX
What? Why?
MILTO
No time for explanations, just run.
They both run.
ALEX
Oh, man, this wasn't on the job description.
MILTO
(laughing)
That's the beauty of it, what's the point if I tell you from the beginning?
Both stop to catch their breath.
ALEX
OK, that's it, you either tell me or I leave.
MILTO
All right, all right, pickpocket.
ALEX
What? You're a thief?
MILTO
Hey, hey, watch your mouth, young man, I am just borrowing it.
ALEX
Yeah, right, like you're going to return their money plus interest.
Milto laughs. Suddenly, becomes serious.
MILTO
OK, tell me a way to make money without stealing.
ALEX
I don't know!
MILTO
So shut up then! You either come with me or go and get killed by those guys.
ALEX
I've never stolen anything in my life. I never even thought about it.
MILTO
Was I born a thief? No! Sometimes life works in mysterious ways.
ALEX
Where are your parents? Why are you alone?
MILTO
I don't have parents. I never have. I was raised as an orphan back in Romania.
ALEX
How did you come to Amsterdam?
MILTO
Richy, you know, promised us a better life. Life in Romania was hell!
ALEX
And he brought you to another hell.
MILTO
He taught us the meaning of life!
Milto offers Alex a share of the stolen money.
ALEX
Oh man!
Alex hesitates for a second, then takes the money.
MILTO
Don't worry, Alex, you will get used to it.
INT. HOLLAND - AMSTERDAM - CENTER - NEXT MORNING
MILTO
OK, Alex, you know what to do?
ALEX
(a little confused)
Yes.
MILTO
Look for police, undercover detectives and whatever you think might cause me a problem.
OLD ALEX (V.O.)
Two months passed and I was still working for Milto. Imagine a twenty-one-year-old boy working for a twelve-year-old kid. But what could I do? He was providing me with cash. He was good at his job and my job was only to keep an eye on him, that's all.
EXT. HOLLAND - AMSTERDAM - CAMP - NIGHT TIME
People get ready for sleep.
MILTO
Alex, how did you come to Amsterdam?
ALEX
I was trying to go to America with a false passport.
MILTO
So what happened, then? How did you end up in here?
ALEX
I didn't make it. It's a long story, forget about it!
MILTO
(looking up)
Oh man, I wonder how it would be to live in America. Once, someone told me that everything is big in America, even the people.
ALEX
(laughing)
I bet they are. Actually, there is only one way to find out.
MILTO
How?
ALEX
(laughing)
To go there!
MILTO
Yeah, right, like it is right at the next corner.
ALEX
I didn't say that it would be easy, but it's worth a try.
MILTO
Alex, how much money do you think we will need to go to America?
ALEX
What?
MILTO
I got some savings. We can use all of it, but I don't know how. Maybe you know the way to get a passport.
ALEX
Milto, you are too young. You can't get a passport. You need your parents to travel.
MILTO
Oh man, I will never get to America!
ALEX
I read somewhere that if you really want something, you will get it sooner or later as long as you believe in it!
TIRED MAN (OS)
Shhh. We are trying to sleep in here.
MILTO
Good night, Alex.
ALEX
Good night.
EXT. AMSTERDAM - CENTER - NEXT MORNING
Alex and Milto walk. Richy and his guys appear and stop them.
RICHY
Morning, guys.
Alex and Milto don't answer, afraid!
RICHY
C'mon, guys, I am happy today and I am not going to hurt you. I just want to talk to you guys.
MILTO
We paid your tax, Richy. If you want, we can pay extra.
RICHY
No, guys, I am cool with that. It's about something else. Come on.
INT. AMSTERDAM - BAR-CAFE - MOMENTS LATER
Richy orders for everybody.
RICHY
Listen, guys, I want you to work for me. Good food, good money, and hey, no more tax. Isn't that great?
ALEX
What kind of job is it?
RICHY
(to Milto)
It's just transportation. You get a package from one place and leave it somewhere else. That's all! You will get all the instructions, don't worry about that.
ALEX
What do the packages contain?
RICHY
Different stuff, like CDs, radios, etc. You know, things that are sold on the streets. The thing is that they're illegal, but don't worry, it's not a big deal. In case someone stops you, the only thing that he can do is confiscate the package and give you a fine. That's all!
MILTO
Are you sure, Richy?
RICHY
Hey, I am always here for you guys, don't worry. Just trust me!
OLD ALEX (V.O.)
At that moment, I was so confused. I didn't know what to do. I was thinking, here I am, doing illegal stuff with these street guys. Who, me? What the hell? Was I supposed to go to America? My destiny? Yeah right, my destiny!
MONTAGE - ILLEGAL ACTIVITIES
- Different packages go to different people.
- Hands get money and other hands get packages.
OLD ALEX (V.O.)
Actually, it was easier than we thought! The only thing we had to do was transport packages every day. Sometimes we had to deliver 3 or 4 packages, sometimes 5, and sometimes even more than that. Richy was happy and we were getting more and more money. Milto and I moved to an apartment in the center of Amsterdam.
INT. HOLLAND - AMSTERDAM - HOUSE - AFTERNOON
Milton and Alex sit in the living room.
MILTO
So, Alex, what do you think about life in Amsterdam?
ALEX
Yeah, it's OK.
(looking at Milto)
Still, I don't understand why Richy pays us so much money for the deliveries? Are those things so expensive?
(beat)
Anyway who cares, I just want to make some money and get out of here for good.
MILTO
Aha-ha, do you think it's so easy? Do you think that Richy will let you go? No, you're trapped here forever!
ALEX
What do you mean?
MILTO
He needs us, because he makes money from us. Wake up, do you know what the packages contain?
ALEX
Some sort of radios and CDs, things that are sold in the streets.
MILTO
No, Alex, no! Drugs, heroin and cocaine. That's why you get so much money for the deliveries.
ALEX
What? Drugs? But Richy--
MILTO
Oh, you are so naïve. Richy, Richy, Richy. Do you really believe him? He is a damn liar.
ALEX
Oh my god, I am a drug dealer!
MILTO
Sort of.
INT. HOLLAND - AMSTERDAM - BAR - MORNING
Milto and Alex look around. They see Richy.
ALEX
Richy, can I talk to you for a moment?
RICHY
Yeah, sure, have a seat.
ALEX
Richy, what do the packages that we deliver contain?
RICHY
I told you, radios and CDs, why?
ALEX
I don't think so, I think it's drugs.
Richy's face changes color.
RICHY
(looks around)
So?
ALEX
I don't do drugs, and I don't want to deal with this kind of thing, sorry.
RICHY
(smiling ironically)
Listen body, you haven't realized who you're dealing with. Let me show you something.
Richy takes Alex to the men's room. Milto and Richy's friends follow them. Richy grabs Alex and puts a knife to his throat.
RICHY
So, what's it going to be? Are you going to work for me or are you going to die? Choose!
ALEX
Richy, I am sorry, please don't kill me. I will do whatever you want.
Richy lets go of Alex.
RICHY
Next time, you will not have a choice. I will cut your throat. Understood?
ALEX
Yes, whatever you say.
Richy and his guys leave.
MILTO
Are you all right?
Alex breathes with difficulty.
ALEX
Yeah, I am fine.
MILTO
I told you, don't mess up with him.
ALEX
Milto, we have to leave Amsterdam.
MILTO
What are you talking about? Richy controls everything. The people who make the false passports, the people with illegal traffic. It's hard. If Richy finds out, he'll kill you!
ALEX
I don't know about you, but I am leaving.
Milto fidgets nervously.
MILTO
I see that I can't change your mind, nevertheless, I am going to show you a way to get out of Amsterdam.
ALEX
Please, tell me.
MILTO
The train that goes to France.
ALEX
Very funny.
MILTO
No, no, I am not joking. You don't have to be inside the train, but on top.
ALEX
On top? You can get killed.
MILTO
Not exactly on top, but inside the roof. There is a space in between the roof and the cabins. Don't worry, many people travel this way, illegal immigrants, of course.
EXT. HOLLAND - AMSTERDAM - TRAIN STATION - EVENING
Milto and Alex sneak past the guards. Milto helps Alex inside the roof.
ALEX
So, this is it.
MILTO
Yeah, this is it. The train is leaving tomorrow morning. It is a long journey, so you better get some sleep.
ALEX
Why don't you come with me?
MILTO
It's not that easy. Richy will kill me. I know he will come to France and get me.
(beat)
Anyway, when you get to France, try not to give your name. Don't tell anybody that you came from Amsterdam. Richy has many friends in France.
Milto gives Alex some money.
ALEX
Oh, you shouldn't.
MILTO
Don't worry, just take the money. In France, there are no charities. You can starve to death!
ALEX
Thanks!
MILTO
Don't mention it. I hope you get to America one day! Bye, my brother!
They hug.
ALEX
Take care!
MILTO
You too!
INT. HOLLAND-FRANCE - TRAIN - ROOF - DARK
The train barrels along noisily. Alex wakes. He sees other people huddled quietly.
OLD ALEX (V.O.)
I don't know how long the train was traveling, but when I woke up, I heard noises. I thought it would be better for me to get off the train. But as I tried to move, someone grabbed my arm. I couldn't see who it was because it was so dark.
DARK STRANGER
Shh...
OLD ALEX (V.O.)
He said something in a foreign language and I didn't understand anything. I suppose he was telling me that it wasn't yet time to get off the train.
(beat)
The train started to move again, but not for long. After 10 to 15 minutes, the train stopped and we couldn't hear anything. We waited for awhile and then we took off.
CUT TO:
EXT. FRANCE - PARIS - EIFFEL TOWER - AFTERNOON
Tourists and Parisians mill about the Eiffel Tower.
OLD ALEX (V.O.)
I had never seen such a beautiful city as Paris. Such a romantic city, the city of lovers, as they call it. Suddenly, I felt lonely. I missed my family and especially Sofia!
INT. PLANE - IN FLIGHT - AFTERNOON
PILOT (ON MICROPHONE)
Ladies and gentlemen, this is Captain James speaking. The seat belt sign is off, so you can move about the cabin if you wish. For those who remain in their seats, I recommend that you keep your seat belt on. Thank you for your cooperation.
The attendants serve dinner.
DISSOLVE TO:
EXT. FRANCE - PARIS - EVENING
OLD ALEX (V.O.)
For the first few days, everything was fine. I had money and I could sleep at a cheap hotel.
The manager of the hotel didn't ask me for a passport, but of course I had to pay in advance.
Before I realized it, the money was spent. All gone! It was weird, but I had the same feeling that I had when I was on that bridge, that other night in Italy, when Ilir found me. Suddenly, I remembered something that Leo told me: 'Your brain contains as many ideas as your pocket contains money!' Wow, he was right! It was the middle of the night and I had an empty pocket and no idea of what to do!
EXT. FRANCE - PARIS - COFFEE SHOP - AFTERNOON
Alex takes a seat, looking tired and hungry.
FRENCH SHOPKEEPER
(subtitled)
Good evening sir.
ALEX
Hi.
Alex points to a sandwich.
ALEX
Something to eat, please!
The shopkeeper says something in French. Alex doesn't understand.
OLD ALEX (V.O.)
He thought that I wanted to buy the sandwich, but when he realized that I didn't have any money, he put the sandwich down, opened a small refrigerator, and took out a piece of bread that looked more like a piece of wood than something you can eat. I felt so embarrassed, I felt so low. I closed my eyes and I took the bread.
Alex leaves the shop and goes to a little park across the street.
Forces himself to eat half the bread. Throws the other half to a street dog. The dog smells the bread, sneezes on it, and leaves.
EXT. FRANCE - PARIS - PARK - NEXT MORNING
Alex wakes, rubs his stomach, and starts walking.
INT. FRANCE - PARIS - FRUIT SHOP - MORNING
Alex goes inside a fruit shop. When the FRUIT SELLER looks away, he takes an apple, puts it in his pocket, and leaves.
Alex sees the fruit seller running after him. The fruit seller catches him.
FRUIT SELLER
(subtitled)
I've got you, thief.
ALEX
I am sorry, I don't speak French.
Alex gives him back the apple and shows him his empty pockets. The fruit seller calms down and points to Alex's shoes.
OLD ALEX (V.O.)
At first, I didn't understand why he was pointing to my shoes, but later on I realized that he was asking me why was I stealing when I was wearing expensive shoes.
ANDY (V.O.)
Expensive shoes?
OLD ALEX (V.O.)
Oh Andy, I forgot to tell you, I still had the shoes. Remember the shoes that I took in Italy?
ANDY (V.O.)
Yeah, but wasn't that like two years before you went to France?
OLD ALEX (V.O.)
About, but they were strong shoes and I took good care of them.
ANDY (V.O.)
What happened then?
OLD ALEX (V.O.)
We argued a lot -- me in Albanian and him in French.
When he realized that he couldn't do anything, he let me go, but he kept the apple.
EXT. FRANCE - PARIS - STREETS - LATE MORNING
Alex walks aimlessly. Suddenly stops. Cannot walk anymore. Sits down on the pavement. People pass by. Some ignore him. Some look at him and continue walking. A few drop some change. Alex doesn't look at the people.
OLD ALEX (V.O.)
That moment was the lowest stage anybody can reach.
Alex gathers up the money. A banknote drops in front of him.
MILTO
It looks like you had a good day, partner!
Alex springs to his feet.
ALEX
Milto?!
MILTO
Hey, Alex.
They hug.
ALEX
I thought I would never see you again! What are you doing in France?
MILTO
After you left, I felt alone. Richy became crazy and started hurting me. He asked me about you, but I didn't say anything. I got scared, I stole his money and I came to Paris the same way that you came. I have been here two weeks looking for you.
ALEX
Milto, can we go and buy something to eat, please? I am starving to death!
MILTO
Of course, let's go.
Both enter the coffee shop where Alex got the bread the other night. The same shopkeeper, cooking something, recognizes Alex and says something in French. Milto shows him some money. He lets the guys in.
Alex and Milto eat greedily.
ALEX
Oh man, this is the best meal I've ever had!
MILTO
I told you, this is France. You can starve to death. There are no charities in France!
ALEX
Yeah, I figured that out.
OLD ALEX (V.O.)
I was so happy. I don't know why, but Milto made me feel secure. He had some friends in Paris. Of course, all of them were shoplifters, but hey, who cared? I had a bed to sleep in and food to eat. Milto started his 'job' and I had to keep an eye on him, my 'job'.
INT. FRANCE - PARIS - HOUSE - AFTERNOON
Milton and Alex are alone.
ALEX
Milto, tell me the truth, why did you come to France? I don't think that you were just afraid of Richy.
MILTO
Hmm, you know, that night that we talked about America, I had the feeling that you were going to get there. When you left, I thought about it and realized that if I was ever going to make it, it would be if I went with you.
ALEX
Milto, for the moment, America is on hold. We have to survive here. I almost died a few days ago.
MILTO
Why didn't you steal some food, for god's sake?
ALEX
I tried, but I guess I am not good at it.
MILTO
(laughing)
Did you? I can't believe it, but how come?
ALEX
(laughing)
It's not funny, OK? When you're hungry, you do anything for food.
(beat)
I don't know how, but the shopkeeper saw me. Somehow he saw me.
MILTO
Let's go tomorrow and I will show you what went wrong.
INT. FRANCE - PARIS - FRUIT SHOP - MORNING
MILTO
Well, look behind you. There is a camera.
ALEX
(surprised)
Camera, inside a store there is a camera?
MILTO
You never saw one?
ALEX
No. He must be very rich to have a camera!
MILTO
No, cameras are common in France. Almost every shop has one. They are not expensive. Anyway, let's go.
INT. FRANCE - PARIS - HOUSE - AFTERNOON
MILTO
Alex?
ALEX
Yep?
MILTO
What are we going to do?
ALEX
What do you mean? I don't understand.
MILTO
We are in danger. Richy, remember?
ALEX
He can't find us in Paris.
MILTO
Trust me, he will! He has many friends in Paris.
ALEX
So what do you suggest we do?
MILTO
Let's go somewhere else, out of France.
ALEX
Not yet. Let's make some money first and then we'll see.
INT. FRANCE - PARIS - POOL HALL - AFTERNOON
SUPER: "A YEAR LATER, 1995"
Alex and a few other Albanians play pool in a noisy pool hall. Alex concentrates on the game.
RICHY (OS)
Good shot!
Alex doesn't answer.
OLD ALEX (V.O.)
The voice sounded familiar, but I couldn't place it. I turned my head and there he was, standing in front of me, the last person I wanted to see. It was Richy. Finally, he had found us!
RICHY
Well, well, my old pal Alex.
ALEX
Hey, Richy.
RICHY
As they say, you can run but you can't hide.
Richy hits Alex hard on his back. A bystander locks eyes with Richy and looks away.
INT. FRANCE - RICHY'S CAR - AFTERNOON
Richy's friends drag Alex out of the pool hall and into a car. Alex's nose is bleeding. Milto is inside the car.
MILTO
I am sorry, Alex.
ALEX
Well, I guess we can't run away from our past.
MILTO
I told you.
INT. FRANCE - PARIS - SHABBY HOUSE - EVENING
Richy goes inside first, then his friends bring Alex and Milto, who look scared to death.
RICHY
What should I do with you guys? Kill you right now, or later on?
MILTO
Richy, listen, we haven't done anything bad to you. We worked for you for awhile and then we didn't want to stay anymore. So what's wrong with that?
RICHY
(upset)
I protected you. I brought you to Amsterdam and you betrayed me for this fucking Greek or whatever he is!
MILTO
Richy, if you want, send me back to Romania or just kill me. I am not coming to Amsterdam with you, OK?
RICHY
(laughing)
What, you are about to die in here and you're playing the fucking hero?!
ALEX
Yeah, leave us alone!
Richy's friend beats them up. They put Alex and Milto in another room and lock the door.
Alex and Milto lie on the floor, bloodied and beaten.
MILTO
Alex?
ALEX
Yep?
MILTO
Are we going to die?
ALEX
(confused)
I don't know.
MILTO
What are we going to do?
ALEX
There is not much to do, is there?
MILTO
Alex, remember that day in Amsterdam when Richy threatened you with his knife?
ALEX
Yes?!
MILTO
You told me that you were going to leave no matter what.
ALEX
What's your point?
MILTO
Let's stand up for ourselves.
ALEX
You're crazy. They are six and we are two. Do you think it's that easy?
MILTO
So what do you suggest we do?
ALEX
Let's do what he says until we get the chance to escape.
